What Should You Do Before The Movers Arrive? Create A Packing Station

Blog

How can you streamline the packing process? You're planning a local move—but you don't have the free time to spend days packing boxes, bins, bags, and more before the movers arrive. If you're searching for a way to organize your move-day prep, take a look at what you need to know about creating and using a packing station.

What Is A Packing Station?

It's all in the name. As the title implies, a packing station is an area (station) where you will pack for your move. While you don't necessarily need a station for your move, it can help you to organize and inventory packing materials, declutter your home, and reduce the overall time packing tasks may take. With a station set up inside of your home, you won't need to waste valuable time tracking down tape or looking through drawers for labels.

What Should You Include In A Packing Station?

There are no rules for what to, or not to, include in a packing station. Before you create a station, think about what you will need to make the packing process easier or to complete this prep step. Common materials necessary to pack (and move) include cardboard boxes, plastic bins with lids, packing tape, bags (garbage bags, totes, or canvas sacks), scissors, bubble wrap, print-free packing paper, permanent markers, labels/masking tape, and clear gallon or sandwich-sized zipper baggies.

You may also want to include smaller boxes for items such as furniture hardware, cords, knick-knacks, or jewelry. Upcycle old plastic containers (with lids) instead of buying new boxes to save on packing supplies. You can also reuse old (clean) bedroom linens or towels as protective padding for fragile items.

How Should You Set Up A Packing Station?

The answer to this question depends on what makes sense to you. The moving company will take care of the lifting, carrying, and transportation. But you need to get everything ready—before they arrive. A packing station helps to increase efficiency before a move. This makes it important to organize the area in a way that works for your prep and packing needs. You may want to group the containers (boxes and bins) in one area and use a shelving unit to house smaller selections, such as tape and markers.

As you organize the station, think about which supplies depend on each other. The markers don't need to go near the bubble wrap—but do need space next to the labels. Likewise, the scissors should go near the bubble wrap, packing paper, and packing tape.

Knowing What To Store

Every home is filled with items that may or may not be necessary, and my home is no different. I started having problems with the sheer volume of things in my home a few years back, and so I decided to move some things into a storage unit. I didn't know what to store at first, so a friend of mine had the great idea to help me to rent a storage unit. She worked with me to identify different things that would work well for my lifestyle, and I stored everything else. Check out this blog to find out how to store smarter every day.
