What Determines The Cost Of A Cross Country Move?

Blog

Have you moved only locally your whole life? You may be familiar with the process of moving homes, but if you are going to be moving across the country for the first time the process can be very different. Here are a few things you need to know about long-distance moving and what will make up the cost.

The Number Of Items You're Taking With You

What makes moving across the country different is that you are charged based on how much stuff you take with you. However, there are two ways that a moving company can measure your belongings. They can either base it on the total weight of the items, or the volume of how much stuff you have.

If your move will be based on the weight, know that the truck will be physically weighed before and after the move to determine how much stuff you have. Your moving company will likely give you an estimate of how much they think the total cost of the move will be, but every item is going to count when using this method. That is why some people purge their belongings and try to take as little as possible.

When determining the cost by volume, it will be based on how much stuff is in the moving truck to determine the square footage. This may be important for a cross country move, because you may not be the only person with things in the moving truck, so having more things from one person can result in room for fewer things from another person.

The Distances To Your New Destination

The total amount of miles that are driven will also play a factor in the price of a move. As you can expect, more miles will cost more money. However, the cost is typically determined by more than just miles. Expect to be responsible for tolls that need to be paid to get to your destination, as well as fuel costs. These can easily add up when you have a really long move across the country.

The Time Of Year That You Move

When your move takes place also determines the cost. This is because there are off-season months where things are slow for moving companies, and they tend to be more competitive with pricing. As the weather gets warmer in early spring and late fall, you can expect more people to move and higher prices.

Knowing What To Store

Every home is filled with items that may or may not be necessary, and my home is no different. I started having problems with the sheer volume of things in my home a few years back, and so I decided to move some things into a storage unit. I didn't know what to store at first, so a friend of mine had the great idea to help me to rent a storage unit. She worked with me to identify different things that would work well for my lifestyle, and I stored everything else. Check out this blog to find out how to store smarter every day.
