Bought Your First RV? 4 Storage Mistakes That Can Cause Serious Harm

Blog

If you recently bought your first RV and you're not sure how to store it, you should learn the proper steps. Mistakes you make during storage can cause serious problems when you go to use your RV again. Before you place your new RV into storage, take steps to avoid making the mistakes described here.

Leaving Water in the Lines

If you're going to store your RV during the winter months, don't leave water in the lines. That's one of the worst things you can do for your RV. You might not realize this, but even a small amount of water can freeze the lines. Once they freeze, you could end up with ruptured lines and water damage. Avoid that problem by draining all your water lines before storing your RV each winter. Also, stop by a pumping station before placing your RV into storage. The holding tank needs to be clean and empty during storage.

Choosing the Wrong Storage Area

If you haven't thought about storage space yet, now's the time to do that. Where you store your RV is as important as how you store it. For instance, if you choose a storage area that lacks security, your RV won't be as well-protected as it should be. Also, if you choose an open space for storage, your RV may suffer weather-related damage. Choose a storage area that provides security and enclosure.

Sealing Your RV Too Tightly

If you've never stored an RV before, you may think that airtight is best. But, that's not the case. You want your RV to have some ventilation, especially during long periods of storage. If you seal your RV up airtight, there won't be enough ventilation to prevent mold and mildew. That means your RV could have an unpleasant odor when you open it up again. Not only that, but you could be left with an unhealthy mold situation to clean up.

Keeping Food on Hand

If you want to make sure you're ready for vacation whenever the opportunity arises, you might have decided to leave your RV stocked with food. Depending on the type of food you store in your RV, it might not be the best time-saving strategy. Foods that are packaged in plastic bags or cardboard boxes attract pests. Avoid the pest problems by keeping your RV cabinets empty during storage.

Make sure your RV is well-protected during storage by taking steps to avoid the RV storage mistakes that are described above.
